Last week, you got the inside scoop on how to appeal to your ideal audience, and today we’re going to talk about how to best engage with them, and keep them hooked once you reach them.

  1. Post content that is engaging, high-quality and deliberate.

When generating your content, keep photos aesthetically pleasing and in good quality. When creating captions, consider this: the best way to start a conversation is to ask a question, right? Right! The next time you find a lack of engagement in your following, spark up a conversation with your followers. Giving your followers the chance to offer you new ideas or feedback, or even just an opportunity to engage in a poll will increase the entertainment they get from your page and attract more attention to your brand.

2. Talk to your followers: respond to comments!

The best way to retain engagement is to reward it. When your followers interact with your posts, interact with them in return! You are more likely to receive comments on your posts if your followers know they can expect a response from you in return. Social media is a two-way conversation, if you make your followers feel noticed you will see them engaging more often.

3. Offer value for your followers.

When a new follower visits your profile, what can they benefit from by following you? Hosting a giveaway can be a chance for your page to take the spotlight and offer a reward for engagement–for both current and prospective followers! This offers a sneak peek into the value of following you. If you host a giveaway, set the rules up in a way that you reward the biggest participants: offer an extra entry for every comment, share, or tag. Leave the entry available for long enough that it has time to draw attention from new pages, but not long enough that the participants forget about it and become disinterested. By offering value–whether that’s advice, a product, or entertainment–free of charge you’re fostering a give-and-get relationship with potential consumers. Think of every follower as a friend, you wouldn’t enjoy or keep a friendship that wasn’t, at least in some way, mutually beneficial.

4. Grab the attention of your followers with valuable captions.

In your captions offer insightful and attractive messages. Add value by offering relatable insight in the information you’re sharing in connection to your post, or you can even try ending your captions with a comment in order to spark interest and prompt response. Whatever works best for your audience, and shows to get you the most engagement! 5. Find the voice that your audience best responds to.

Whether you are speaking on your brand’s behalf or writing a caption in the first person as the person making the post, make sure you are speaking directly to your audience in a way that is fluid and retainable. You can learn more about how to connect and target your audience with voice and content in our previous blog post, The 3 Rs of successfully targeting your audience.
